Thank God For The Rabbits – Lyrics Terry Bennetts

Thank God for the Rabbits

My old Pop never knew of stocks and bonds, the decline in the company shares
And the market price of silver and gold He was completely unaware
But in nineteen twenty nine and the years that followed on
He would learn of this the hard way, and he would not be alone

He was just a simple bushman and to hard work he’d been bred
He could feed and clothe his family, keep a roof over their heads
So he worked his little farm, chopped wood for the town kept their fires going
But it got harder day by day As the town folk couldn’t pay

The family all pitched in, my mum and her brother Jim
They’d be gone for most of the day, but old pop knew where they’d been
For they were good at trapping rabbits and they caught them by the score
There was sixpence for every three they sold and there was food brought through their door

Thank God for the rabbits, they were their saving grace
A curse to the farmer, to them dinner on the plate
They were thankful for the meat they gave, and a few bob in the tin
Thank God for the rabbits, for tonight they eat again

My Mums now eighty five, and still as sharp as a tack
There’s nothing wrong with her recall as to that young girl she looks back
All the hardships they would face, that was with them every day
Still lives strong in my mum’s memory never to fade away

For with so many out of work, everyone trying to make ends meet
From that poor lone swaggie out on the road to a family with a mob to feed
So for years those times remembered, throughout our land would take it’s toll
And for many if there’d been no rabbits, they’d have had no meat at all

Thank God for the rabbits, they were their saving grace
A curse to the farmer, to them dinner on the plate
They were thankful for the meat they gave, and a few bob in the tin
Thank God for the rabbits, for tonight they eat again
Thank God for the Rabbits, for tonight they eat again
